Last August 7, members
of ALP held its monthly The meeting started at around 3:00pm with Edmund Rosales gives and informative lecture on basic astronomy entitled "Celestial Navigation." He touched from historical backgrounds on how ancient people were able to use the stars to navigate the seas as well as determine directions. He also discussed on how to use different types of star maps, how to determine altitude using basic hand technique; vernal and autumnal equinox, etc. Then, it was Allen Yu's turn to give a book review on the book entitled "Companion to the Cosmos" by John Gribbin, the book is an astronomy dictionary with extended discussion and info on Cosmology and Astrophysics.. Afterwards, James Kevin Ty then discussed on the computations of determining magnifications, actual field of view, difference between the standard 50 degrees eyepieces compared to the more expensive wide angles (60 degrees) , Panoptics (68 degrees) and Naglers (82 degrees) eyepieces and how they differ in terms of quality and field of view. He also tackle a little way on how to select a good eyepiece set for a particular telescope in terms of determining its proportion to our eyes' exit pupil. He mostly use the optical specifications of the ALP's 8" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope as example so that it can be memorized by the members when using the telescope in stargazing as well as public viewing. After the lecture, James also invited the members to join him to observe the August 14 Antares Occultation by the Moon at UP-PAGASA Observatory wherein they will share data with observatory staff headed by Elmor Escosia to get images as well as timing Ingress (Disappearance) and Egress (Reappearance) contact times. The data will be forwarded to IOTA as well as ALPO afterwards. He also gives some tips on what a occultation observers should need aside from the telescope such as stop watch, compass, GPS ( to get exact location data as well as accurate time signal) video and still cameras , etc. Lastly, the winners of the just concluded 1st ALP The meeting ended at around 6pm already but our fellow ALPer Jett Aguilar hosted a big birthday blowout party at Hap Chan Tea House to the delight of the members who attended the meeting. Belated Happy Birthday Jett!!! For more images, pls click here.
