AUGUST 28, 2007 TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE

by James Kevin Ty

There will be a total lunar eclipse that will be visible in the Philippines as well as Asia and western coast of US on August 28, 2007. This eclipse observing opportunity will favor the western coast of US as they will be able to observe the eclipse entirely while we here in the Philippines as well as Southeast Asia will be able to observe this eclipse with totality  already starting at Moonrise :(  Nevertheless this will still be a very beautiful eclipse and will be cherish by eclipse lovers as the last time we were able observe totality is way back in May 5, 2004!!! The image right was taken by the James Kevin Ty last May 5, 2004 at the roof deck of UP-NISMED using a 4" f/5.4 TV-101 refractor with negative projection at f/18.

The Moon will be located in the constellation of Aquarius devoid of any bright stars and planets At maximum, the eclipse will reach an umbral magnitude of about 1.48  .  The next visible total lunar eclipse (with totality visible  here locally is concerned) will be on June 15, 2011.  Between this eclipse till the June 15, 2011 will be some partial and penumbral lunar eclipses only.

Below is the complete data of the event in Philippine Standard Time:

STAGE OF THE ECLIPSE TIME (PST) ALTITUDE AZIMUTH
Moonrise (Moon enters Umbra already) 6:08:00 PM 0 deg 100 deg East
Maximum Totality 6:37:22 PM 6 deg 102 deg ESE
Totality Ends 7:22:45 PM 16 deg 105 deg ESE
Moon exits Umbra 8:23:50 PM 30 deg 111 deg ESE
Moon exits Penumbra 9:22:29 PM 42 deg 119 deg ESE

Below is the full eclipse info provided by Fred Espenak fo NASA GSFC .  Please note that all the data in the illustration are in Universal Time (UT).  To convert to Philippine Standard Time, please add 8 hours into the UT. Click on the illustration below for clarity:

ALP members will set up observation and imaging plans at the roof deck of the PAGASA Observatory in UP- Diliman.  They will be setting up telescopes and video cameras to document this event. In case you plan to join us there at the site, please inform us in advance so we can expect you there as well. This will also let us inform the staffs at the Observatory in case there will be more than 10 persons going there as I got a permission only for ALP members on the roof deck so let us know in advance in case you plan to join.
