Father Victor L. Badillo, S.J., 1930 - 2014

Last Saturday morning, October 26, 2014, we lost our beloved director,mentor, and friend, Father Victor L. Badillo , S.J. Father Badillo belongs to the last breed of outstanding Philippine Jesuit astronomers who followed the scientific tradition of Father Fedirico Faura (Padre Faura), Father Miguel Selga, Father James Hennessey, and Father Francis Heyden among others. More than this, Father Badillo with his humility, compassion, and selfless devotion to the advancement of professional and amateur astronomy in the Philippines had always been an inspiration and role model for both young and not so young Filipino astronomers and scientists. Asteroid Badillo (minor planet no. 4866) measuring some 13 to 30 kilometers across was named after him by the International Astronomical Union as a recognition of his lifelong passion to popularize astronomy and science in the Philippines. Father Badillo might have left us already but he will always live in our hearts and memories.

He was born in January 23, 1930. Philippines once again loses an icon in the field of Astronomy. Father Victor L. Badillo, is also the Chairman Emeritus of the Philippine Astronomical Society.

Father Badillo now lies at the chapel of the Loyola House of Studies, Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City. Wake masses are held at 8 PM, on October 26 by Fr. Ben Nebres, Oct 27, by Fr. Peter Walpole, and on Oct 28 by Fr. Dan McNamara. The funeral mass will be on Oct 29, Wednesday, at 8:30 AM at the chapel in Loyola House of Studies. Fr. Socius William Abbott will preside, and Fr. Jose Villarin will give the homily. Interment follows at the Jesuit cemetery in Sacred Heart Novitiate. We will miss you Father Victor L. Badillo, SJ !
