ALP June 7, 2009 Meeting Report

Last June 7, members of the
Astronomical League of the Philippines (ALP) held its
monthly meeting at the Manila Planetarium. Members who
were present that day were James Kevin Ty , Angie Tan,
Dr. Armando Lee, wife Mia and son Jason, Tommy Tan,
Andrew Ian Chan, Dennis Buenviaje , Aileen Rose Sasot ,
Bel Pabunan, Soriano Lim and friends Alex Yu and Eric,
Lou Balayan, Desiree del Rosario , Rome Candaza &
brother Arjay Candaza , Rich Pijuan, Nicole Callanta ,
Romel Palacpac, and newest ALP members Berenice Viola
Chan, Zareer Contractor, Christopher Lee, Wilbert Palma,
Roldan de Guia, Johnny Quinto, wife Alpha and daughters
Jaime & Jemimah Quinto.
Prior to the start of the
meeting, some team members of the ALP Wuhan Eclipse Team
had a dry run of their setup and it lasted from
2:30-4:00pm.
The meeting proper started at around 4:00pm with
members giving a short introduction to each other as
there are many new members that joined up that
afternoon. Afterwards, ALP President James Kevin Ty
made a power point presentation entitled "July 22, 2009
Total Solar Eclipse - An overview of the event from
Wuhan and Philippines."
He made an overview of the eclipse itself and first
discussing where the eclipse is visible on Earth as well
as where totality will cross. Afterwards, he discuss
the different stages of a total solar eclipse and what
to expect from viewing a total solar eclipse at the
totality path. He said that this eclipse is the same
Saros 136 as that of the June 10, 1955 Total Solar
Eclipse that was visible in Manila.

He also tackled on how to view the eclipse safely as
well as how to image the eclipse. He then invited
members and visitors to join him as well as other ALP
members going to Wuhan on July 20 to observe and image
the eclipse. Lastly, James gave an updates on the
activities as well as training schedules that will
follow starting this month till E-Day. Among ALPers who
had confirmed and booked their slots to the team were
James Kevin Ty, Dr Jett Aguilar, , Andrew Ian Chan,
Zareer Contractor, Francisco Lao, Jr. & Johnny Quinto's
Family . Dr. Armando Lee & Francis Sarmiento will have
separate flight skeds to Wuhan as well. Expected to
join them at Wuhan are Angie Tan, Soriano Lim, Berenice
Viola Chan, Dennis and Ryan Buenviaje.

intention to join the trip in China. This si also open
to non ALP members who are interested to join them as
well. Details and plans of the eclipse trip is
tentatively withheld for further announcements. So do
contact him asap to get to know on the eclipse trip. The
meeting ended at around 6:00pm.
