Meeting Report

Last June 19, members of the
Astronomical League of the Philippines
(ALP) held their monthly meeting at the Manila
Planetarium. Members who
attended were ALP President James Kevin Ty , wife
Charito and son Kendrick Cole KC Ty , VP Jett Aguilar,
director Edgar Ang, Bel Pabunan , Desiree del
Rosario, Arnel Campos, John Ray Cabrera, Pia Cuarteros,
Christelle Mariano, Christopher Louie Lu , wife Karen
& daughter Frances Lu.
Meeting proper started at
around 3:00pm with ALP VP Jett Aguilar giving a very
educational and interesting lecture on Observing the
Moon. He started out with basic celestial
mechanics of the Moon and some theories on how the Moon
was formed. He then touches on the different
phases of the Moon as well as describing the features of
the Moon which is basically categorized as highlands
which consist mainly of craters and mountains and the
other category namely the lowlands which features mostly
the Mare or Marias.
Also discussed are the main
mares as well as prominent crater formations as well as
identifying them. He also discussed on lunar
eclipses and tackle on how lunar eclipse occurs.

The meeting ended at around 4:30pm
with ALP President James Kevin Ty announcing the
upcoming 6th ALP 9 Ball Billiard Tournament which will
be held on July 31, 2011 at Playdium Bowling and
Billiard Center. Next monthly meeting will be held
on August 7, 2011 at Science Discovery Center in SM Mall
of Asia.
