August 7, 2011 ALP Monthly Meeting  Report

Last August 7, members of the Astronomical League of the Philippines (ALP) held their monthly meeting at Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center at SM Mall of Asia. Members who attended were ALP President James Kevin Ty and son Kendrick Cole KC Ty , Treasurer Andrew Ian Chan and Iah Serna, directors Rich Pijuan ,Alfonso Uy, Berenices Chan, Christopher Louie Lu , wife Karen  & daughter Frances Lu,  Arnel Campos, Dennis Buenviaje, Vincent Gella, new members Adriano Sagun III, Joanne Escober, Miguel Enrique Cajita and mom Melanie Cajita.

Meeting proper started at around 3:30pm with ALP director Rich Pijuan lecturing  and doing hands on session on her 3rd installment of Exploring The Night Sky Through Arts.  As she was explaining the techniques, ALPers were surprised with new ALPer Miguel Enrique's  good talent in drawing and sketching.  His drawing of the space shuttle and the Northern Lights were astonishing at his tender age.  Who knows?  We might discover another astro gem in him!

ALPer Christopher Louie Lu gave a very interesting lecture entitled Celestial Navigation - Finding Your Way Through The Night Sky.

Astro Kids getting serious in astro art and painting.

Afterwards, ALP Special Events chairman Christopher Louie Lu lectured on a basic astronomy topic entitled Celestial Navigation:  Finding Your Way Through The Night Sky.  He started out by enumerating different tools we can use to observe the sky.  He then proceeded to explain what different type of objects that can be viewed by an astronomer. Afterwards, the then give some pointers on how to measure the night sky using our fingers and hand.  Navigational terms were also carefully explain.  Last but not the least, he also give some pointers on how to use some main constellation and its bright stars to help locate other stars and constellation.  Full outline of Chris' lecture can be viewed here.

ALP President James Kevin Ty then welcome ALP newest members to the society as well as give some updates on the game standings of the ALP 10 ball tournament as well as the preparations for ALP anniversary party and Mooncake Dice Game to be held on September 11, 2011 at Manila Planetarium.  The meeting ended at around 6:00pm.
