Meeting Report

Last November 8th, ALP held
their monthly meeting at Exploreum at SM Mall of Asia.
Members who attended were ALP President James Kevin Ty,
VP Jett Aguilar, Secretary Christopher Louie Lu, Auditor
Edgar Ang, PRO Edge Lat , directors John Ray
Cabrera , Peter Benedict Tubalinal, Rich Pijuan,
Ronald Sison and sons Raj and Adrian ; Manuel Goseco, Shubhashish
Banerjee, Joyce Golsalves , Per Edman, Justine Garcia
and Miguel Cajita.
Meeting started with ALPer
Shubhashish Banerjee giving a basic lecture entitled
Astronomy 101. He tackle the
bare basic fundamentals
that would help people get started or more
engaged in Astronomy. He have covered the topics
with enough depth to understand without going
into the physics of it given the background of
some of our members. The introductory session
kick starts with a little bit of history on
various models of the universe and how it
expanded over centuries and contrasts various
astro related studies. He also discussed
the physics around light and optics so that the
members develop an appreciation towards the mode
of observation they choose over another. Post
covering basics. He then went a little deeper
into observational aspects, such as - types of
astronomy, telescopes, mounts and buying
considerations. That laid the foundation for
having detailed discussion on celestial orbits.
He couldn't cover the rest of the topics in
detail and will do so next time. The rest
of the topics contains - Stellar evolution /
life cycle of a star, The Sun and the moon,
common constellations of northern sky 'Orion'
and things to see in and around Orion. He
concluded the session with a discussion on how
to star hop and how to include astronomy more
and more into our daily lives.
Afterwards,
ALP Secretary Christopher Louie Lu then presented
Celestial Highlights for the month of November. ALP
President James Kevin Ty then discussed on the
possible venue for ALP December Christmas party at Centerstage KTV at SM Mall of Asia on December 6, 2015.
Meeting ended at around 5:00pm.
