August 7, 2016 ALP Monthly Meeting Report

Last August 7, ALP held their monthly meeting at Exploreum at SM Mall of Asia. Members who attended were ALP President James Kevin Ty and son Kendrick Cole KC Ty; Secretary Christopher Louie Lu and daughter Frances Lu ;  Treasurer Andrew Ian Chan, Auditor Edgar Ang, PRO Edge Lat, director Iah Serna , Aireen Grace Andal, Edwin Gatia and Michella Esparas.  Meeting started at around 3:30pm with ALP Secretary Christopher Louie Lu giving a lecture on Celestial Highlights for August  specially on the Perseid Meteor Shower.  The highlight event for this month will be on the 13th when Earth crosses the debris of  the comet Swift-Tuttle. This field which contains particles of ice & dust about the size of grains of sand or rice to no bigger than small rocks. This event is called the Perseids Meteor Shower, named after the constellation of Perseus where the 'Radiant', or the apparent point of origin of meteors in the night sky. The Perseids is famous even during ancient times, it boasted to have 60 – 100 meteor under ideal sky conditions.

Here are a few tips to view the Perseids meteor shower:

1. Choose a spot that is far away from bright lights; open country is preferred.

2. Naked eye observation is best.   

3. A reclining lawn chair is a good piece of equipment to have, as it prevents neck strain caused by constantly   peering skyward.         

4. Check the weather forecast and be prepared for chilly weather with proper clothing or a blanket. Hot chocolate can add to the enjoyment.           

5. Before the big night, observers should have studied a star chart and perhaps located the constellation Perseus in the real sky so that time is not wasted getting oriented when the big night comes.

Lastly, ALP Events Chairperson Iah Serna gives a final rundown on the upcoming September 11, 2016 ALP 13th anniversary lunch get together party at Vikings Luxury Buffet at SM Mall of Asia.

The meeting ended at around 5:30pm and some members proceeded to Center Stage KTV upon the request of ALPer Edwin Gatia to have some good time to sing and enjoy the evening.  They later had dinner at Pepper Lunch before going home.
